I went to see Run Fatboy Run tonight. It was cute, and had cameos of many of my favorite British comic actors (David Walliams acting perfectly bitchy and difficult, Stephen Merchant complaining about something as usual, Simon Day as a vaguely threatening mob type, etc.). *shrug*

Also, it really is pretty straightforward.

The girls just reminded me about these things -- colored bubbles. I blogged about them back in late '05. I'm sad to realize that they are apparently, as noted in the comments here, never going to actually happen. What a disappointment. Bleh.

If I say that I have very strong memories of riding with my Dad in his new white Pinto (with the dark blue interior), listening to Bat out of Hell over and over on his 8-track tape player...

Why it is so damn hard to plan meals in this family:

Sammy: Will not eat vegetables of any kind, except the stems (but not the tops) of broccoli florets. Doesn't like visible pieces of onion or green pepper. Favorite meat: kielbasa. Loves carbs of all kinds (bread, noodles, rice, sweet stuff, etc.)

Alice: Will eat most vegetables. Doesn't mind onions or green peppers, but cooked tomato makes her gag. Will not eat kielbasa. Loves carbs of all kinds, just like her sister.

Me: Will eat most vegetables. Loves onions, and green peppers in moderation. Likes big pieces of cooked tomato in things like chili, spaghetti sauce, etc. Loves most meats. Cannot eat most carbs (except brown rice occasionally).

Thankfully, Anth will eat just about anything, although he drowns most of what I cook in Tabasco.

It may seem to you that I am stalling on finishing my story of the video shoot. This would in fact be the case. The rest of what I need to talk about has much more emotional content associated with it, compared to what I've written so far (which is basically just "we did this, we ate that, we couldn't sleep..." kind of stuff). I'm not trying to sound cryptic or anything, but this is why I haven't talked about the trip in the past 2 weeks.

This is not why I haven't blogged much in the past week, though -- that's more because I've been busy with a work project (one of my employers is completely moving and redesigning their website, so I've had a lot to do in helping with that) and with some other silly stuff (like Easter Egg hunts on Facebook's (fluff)Friends, which I got a little addicted to).

In other news, Alice is off from school this week, so we've all been kind of wallowing in our own crapulence and whatnot. We're finally taking my car in to the shop tomorrow, to get that "check engine" light (which came on exactly a month ago, at the very beginning of our trip to Brooklyn) looked at. I'm putting a lot of effort into cutting down on sugar in my diet, which is messing with my self-image and my appetite in all kinds of ways. I need to plan meals and make up a grocery list today, which I always hate to do. The kids had a nice Easter (favorite gifts: Alice - a pocket knife, Sammy - chocolate). There's over a dozen colored eggs in my fridge, but no one in the house really loves hard-boiled eggs, and egg salad is not an option (because it totally gags me out). Most of the crocuses I planted last fall did not come up; I think something ate them. I'm trying to plan the summer (Pony Camp? Science in the Summer? swimming lessons?), which feels premature but is actually right on time. And I have to get Alice and Sammy registered for school next year in the next couple weeks. Big changes coming in the rest of the year!!

I belong to a mailing list that started as one of those "due date" lists -- we were all pregnant and due in August, 1997. It's a tight-knit and loving group of women, and we've been through an awful lot together. Now the worst thing ever has happened: One of our "Auggie" babies (who are all obviously 10 years old) was killed yesterday in a car crash.

Please think today of Tina, her husband Rick, their son Rhys (spelled wrong in the article), and dear departed Maeve, who was going to be a veterinarian and work with dolphins when she grew up. I'm hugging my Auggie baby extra tight right now (even though she's driving me crazy today, with her sister's help).

Sammy has decided that she no longer wishes to attend storytime at the local library. She says that storytime at the local library is "like hell". Personally, my vision of the underworld does not include singing little songs, reading picture books and doing simple crafts (well, okay, maybe the singing part), but apparently Sammy's opinion differs.

...continuing with the video story...

The second day of shooting went much more smoothly for us, because we had a much better idea of what to do, and how and when to do it. We ate carbs (muffins, bagels, milk, coffee, cookies, croissants, fruit, and cereal, distributed variously among us) from the hotel lobby for breakfast, then walked with no rush to the church. Instead of the big useless tote bags full of kid activities from yesterday, today I brought one cute but capacious little clutch bag with just enough fun stuff (handheld video games, crayons, markers, paper and stickers) to keep anyone from actually dying of boredom. This bag was small enough that it could be easily hidden during shots as needed, so I could keep it with us the whole day. I even had a few snacks in there.

On this day, the whole band (all nine of them) was on set, so there was a lot more going on at all times. Any band members not involved in the shot that was currently being set up or run tended to congregate together, singing and jamming with their instruments. This was interesting and entertaining, which further eased the kids' difficulties with the long hours. More than anything else, though, I think what made the second day easier was that all three of us had very realistic expectations of how the day would go.

The next small batch of pictures from the shoot starts here.

On Thursday, Sammy's fever broke around bedtime. She slept really well that night, and yesterday she seemed to be pretty much recovered. She even went outside and played with her sister for a while in the evening.

But last night she popped the fever again. Now she's back to 102°F and the laying on the couch. And my throat is sore this morning. This sucks.

As the weeks pass, I'm getting more and more anxious about this Gogol Bordello video. The worst case scenario (which I'm perseverating about like you wouldn't believe) is that, when we finally get to see it, we find out that Sammy's in it and Alice isn't. If that happens (and it certainly could), she will be very very upset.

This week was Spring Break for the local university, which meant that Alice didn't have speech therapy.

Next week is Spring Break for the local public school district, which means that Alice won't have ballet class. She still has school, though, because she attends a private school.

The week after that is Spring Break for Alice's school, which means that she won't have school, but she will have speech therapy and ballet class.

I wish just one year, her school could get in line with somebody else for Spring Break, because it's always like this. Bleh.

Sammy's still sick today. After seeming and acting better yesterday before lunch, she fell asleep on the couch in the afternoon and woke with 103.2°F fever and no energy, both of which persisted the rest of the night. Today she's been alternating between "nearly all better, can I have some food," "flat on the couch, watching cartoons with a slack mouth," and "asleep." She keeps asking for food (which is good, because she didn't eat between 1 p.m. yesterday and 10 a.m. today), but then 20 minutes after she eats anything she says her tummy hurts. And the fever's still there, but not quite as high. What a miserable existence.

I, on the other hand, feel pretty much all better. And Alice has so far escaped the contagion altogether. But at any rate, nothing much else happened today because Sammy's been so all-consumingly sick.

In other health news, we went to a birthday party over the weekend, and about an hour after we left the party, the hostess started to get a fever. That fever has since developed into the full-blown flu. Yesterday, Sammy had the fever and the body aches and the fatigue, and I gave her some Oscillo, and let her rest. She didn't pop a high fever overnight last night, and this morning she said she felt alllll better, but just now she's fallen asleep on the couch while watching cartoons.

I, on the other hand, have some unpleasant chesty/throaty thing going on. I don't have any of the symptoms that Sammy has, but I seem to have something. Spring fever, maybe. Bleh.

Sammy is sick today, poor little thing, with fever and body aches and fatigue. She's spending the day on the couch, snuggling with her big sis and watching her play some Zelda game.

The depression has mostly lifted today, although the stress remains. I'm trying to figure out where I can say "no" without making myself feel worse in the long run, or missing out on something that might turn out to be really cool.

...continuing on with the story of the video...

Sometime around lunch (I forget exactly when), Elijah Wood stopped by the location. At the time, I thought he was there as a friend of Eugene's (they were in Everything is Illuminated together, and if you haven't seen that movie you should go watch it now). It wasn't until after I got home and puttered around Wikipedia that I found out that Elijah has been dating one of the Gogol Bordello dancers for several years now. Anyway, he kind of hung out and chatted with the band for half an hour or so, then left. Lots of people were taking pictures of/with him. I, again, did not want to get in his face so I tried to just get a decent zoomed-in snap of him to show Anth that I Saw a Famous Person™, but none of my shots turned out. I am still struggling to get the hang of using my new camera (which is Anthony's old camera), so a lot of the pictures I really really really wanted to take at this video shoot turned out too fuzzy. Wah.

Anyway, after lunch, more shots with Eugene, and with the dancers. We weren't in any of these shots except perhaps the camera might have panned past us in the background at some point.*

* Here's where I confess that I won't be surprised if they end up using NONE of the footage that included me, because I had an awful time not grinning and/or singing along with the song, no matter how many times I heard it (or parts of it) over and over. I'm such a sap.

The girls got increasingly bored, and Sammy in particular was whining and asking every 5 minutes if it was time to go home yet. Around 5 pm (which was the early-middle of the stretch between lunch and dinner), she pitched a wobbler which necessitated me taking her totally out of the location and standing in a freezing-cold hallway while she calmed down/finished bitching and moaning. When we came back in after that, I held her (still snuffling) on my chest and she fell asleep on me like she used to when she was a baby. She slept for about 40 minutes, and didn't wake up through several takes (with audio playback).

Dinner was noodles and more noodles (some with meat sauce, some vegetarian). I sighed and ate a huge plate.

We finished for the night around 8:30, and got back to the hotel room about 9. Alice needed a shower and Sammy needed a bath, but we were too exhausted to bother with any of it. We brushed teeth and snuggled into the bed to watch TV. The kids were out by 10. I stayed up an hour or so later than that, but did eventually fall asleep, more or less.

I got the black, black depression on me today. I'm so low, my chest hurts. Yesterday was kind of a sucky day in a lot of ways, and I've got a lot of worries and sadness hitting me right now. Work is a stressor in more ways than one, and we need to get Sammy to the dentist but can't even say the word to her without a meltdown, and while I'm happily avoiding the "I'm gonna diiiie" worries this time in regards to the lump in my breast, I am still worried about procedures and medical bills and further disruptions to my already fractured-feeling life. I'm also having a really hard time with food right now, and have lost my appetite and taste for most types of food. It's hard for me to enjoy living if I can't enjoy eating, and right now I can't think of anything that would taste good to me.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get off the floor.

Things...

- We lost power last night, for the hours leading up to bedtime, because of high whooshy winds. (It came back on after midnight.) Always an adventure!!

- Sammy got a Chinese yo-yo in a birthday party goody bag yesterday. Fun for all ages!!

- I am so freaking behind in work, reading the books I've got out of the library, posting pictures, blogging about the video shoot, watching the movies I've got from Netflix, cleaning the house, etc. etc. etc. I'm so behind that I can't even figure out what I should be doing first, and am wallowing in a paralyzed state of indecision and overload. Plus I've got cramps.

- Speaking of library books, I seem to have lost one, and I wasn't done reading it yet. Bleh.

- Today I changed my sigquote from
"Worrying is a secular form of prayer" -- David Anderegg
to
"Quit with the wisdom, we're griping here!" -- shapu

- I go in to the midwife to re-check the lump in my breast on Wednesday. I'm not worried about it. Should I be worried about that?

- I miss my hour, although somehow (through a random and magical confluence of events like insomnia and nosebleeds) the kids and I are pretty much already waking up at the correct time each morning, thank goodness.

- I am pleased that now it won't get dark until 7:30. That will (among other things) make it easier to get Alice to go to ballet without griping.

- We heard the spring peepers last night! If you listen to the "Collective" sound file on that page, it's exactly what it sounds like on our deck around dusk.

- I need to go out this week and clear the dead leaves off of the place where I planted my crocuses. I mostly-cleared one small patch last week and there were some very sad scraggly yellow plants (I'm not even sure they're crocuses; they may be Martian flora) struggling under that heavy wet mat of oak leaves.

- The word "mat" looks really wrong to me. I want to give it at least another 't', and possibly an 'e' as well.

- I got roped into making a bunch (well, like a dozen or so, which is A LOT for me) of long-distance cold calls. I HATE MAKING PHONE CALLS. It has to be done in the next couple days, though. Bleh.

Edited later to add:
- Hey, there's a whole bunch of robins in our yard!!

...continuing on...

So we got to the location bright and early on Tuesday morning. We signed our release forms and were directed to go change in a tiny little cold and grotty men's room, then to put all of our bags and personal effects on a landing, in front of a doorway, two flights of stairs above the basement where we would be shooting. Because the entire room would be used in the video, we were not allowed to bring any of our "stuff" into the room where we would be spending our day. Bad news for us and our two tote bags full of things for the kids to do during the downtime. Yeah.

Anyway, we spent the morning alternately being bored (during downtime) and pretending to be bored (during shooting). None of the band members were there yet; the shots that were done during these hours were all about showing how dull this wedding was before Gogol Bordello infiltrates it. So lots of footage of us all sitting at our tables (each of which was pre-littered with half-full glasses of fake wine, crumpled napkins, and plates of mostly-eaten food*), yawning and acting half-asleep.

* The (real, but stale and not for eating) prop food at our dull American wedding was hilarious: little crustless baloney and cheese sandwiches on white bread, Rice Krispie treats, cheese balls (the puffy Cheeto kind), plain crackers, and ants on a log (celery with cream cheese and raisins) and dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets! I almost forgot the dino nuggets!! Worst. Wedding. Ever.

Two of our featured shots were done during this part of the day. One was a close-up of Sammy, resting her head on my shoulder (shot over my shoulder) -- she starts out facing away from the camera, then shifts her head to face towards the camera with her eyes cast down. The other shot was a medium of me and both kids -- Sammy is on my lap and Alice is sitting next to us, I'm looking up and away from them. We went two different ways from there; one version was shot where Alice (acting bored and naughty) pokes Sammy on the nose and I whip my head around and scold her, and one version where Alice (acting bored but tender) pets Sammy lovingly on the face and I kind of notice it and smile at them. Again, I have no idea whether any of this will be used in the final video.

They also spent some time recording people dancing on the dance floor (couples slow dance, and the chicken dance). This wasn't done to playback of the Gogol Bordello song, so I don't know exactly where/how any of it will be used in the video. My kids were asked if they wanted to be in on the chicken dance, but they declined. (They almost certainly would have appeared in the video if they'd accepted, because I'm sure that chicken dance will be in there somewhere, but I wasn't about to force them to do anything they weren't comfortable with.)

Around 11:30, Eugene (the lead singer and charismatic leader) of the band arrived, and they started shooting the non-boring parts of the video. This was fun (because there was audio playback of the song, and it was entertaining to watch Eugene mug for the camera), but a bit dull for the kids (because they did several takes of each shot, so there was a lot of repetition, and because we had to (a) act bored if we were at all in shot or (b) stay out of the way and be non-disruptive if we weren't). The kids were still doing fairly well at this point, playing with balloons and hanging out with the other kids* that were on set, but you could tell that Alice was getting a little impatient with the enforced inactivity, and Sammy pretty much asked me every 10 minutes from 10 a.m. on if it was time to go yet.

* There were three other kids: a girl, 7, and her brother, 5, and another boy, 10. There was also a girl there of about 13, but she hung with the grown-ups most of the time.

We broke for lunch around 12:30 or 1. The food was extremely carb-heavy (deli meat, cheese, sliced avocados and tomatoes, plus white and wheat bread) but pretty tasty. I was starving, so I continued to ignore my health and ate my fill.

Today is March 4th, the only day of the year that's a command, so we did in fact venture out and got stuff done -- got the oil changed, dropped off old clothes at the collection bins, stopped by the library, stocked up on toilet paper, etc.

Today is also exactly 3 months until Sammy's birthday: she's 5¾ today, but not at all excited about her impending six-ness because she has equated being 6 with having loose teeth, and she's so terrified about that experience (because of all the angst her sister exhibits every time she goes through it) that she doesn't want her birthday to come. Poor little chook.

I know I'm late on getting back to the story of the video shoot. This week is kicking my butt, seriously. I've got an all-day meeting tomorrow, we've got eye exams and groceries on Thursday, and I'm selling at a consignment sale on Friday and Saturday. I am writing the next part in my head and am hopeful that I'll get it downloaded onto the computer very soon.

...continuing on...

Despite of (or perhaps partially because of) my inability to sleep on Monday night, I woke up at 5:00 on Tuesday morning and stayed awake. I started to fret about where I was going to park when we drove to the location, because the church had no parking lot and all of the on-street parking within view was full when we'd been there on Monday afternoon. Additionally, there were only 8 parking spaces in the hotel lot, and there were signs everywhere stating that those spaces were 'first come, first serve'. So I was worried about both ends -- where the heck was I going to put the car at the church, and what the heck was I going to do if we got back to the hotel late at night and couldn't park in the lot??

I got really anxious about all of this -- waking up too early after a night of almost no sleep makes me prone to idées fixes and uncontrollable perseveration. Finally, around 6:30, I decided that we would just walk to the damn shoot. It was only about 7½ blocks -- approximately 0.6 miles according to the map I'd printed.

Soooo... Around 7:00 I grabbed a shower, then slapped the kids awake with great difficulty. We got dressed, grabbed all of our stuff (two tote bags full of things for the kids to do during downtime, plus a big bag containing our "costumes," because we didn't want to walk in our little spring dresses and dressy shoes), and headed out.

The hotel offered a continental breakfast, which was of course coffee plus 100% carb foods (muffins, croissants, bagels, fruit, cereal). I wasn't sure how long it would take us to walk to the church, so I was very impatient about how much time we had to spend in eating. Alice scarfed some muffins and milk, I gave Sammy a cup full of Cheerios to eat as we walked, and I think I grabbed a croissant or something (non-ideal, but I didn't want to starve) and a cup of blessed blessed coffee.

The walk to the church turned out to be very manageable, although the kids complained about having to do it anyway. We got to the location in plenty of time for the 8:00 start.

Before I go any further, a couple of points to disclose:

1. I don't think we'll appear very much in the finished video. There were only three shots that included any of our faces in close or medium focus (and I'll try to talk about those later), and there's no way to know whether or how those shots will be used. Other than that, our backs will probably show up in the background of some of the pans. The video should be super-cool anyway. I can't wait to see it!!

2. We didn't meet any of the members of the band, and I didn't get any posed pictures of any of us with any of the band. There were about 100 people in that big room, including the band, the crew, and the extras. As a housewife-looking mama-type person, I didn't really register as flirtation material for any of the band members*, so nobody really even made eye contact with me, and they mostly ignored the kids, too (although I did get a couple pictures of the accordion player, Yuri, batting a balloon back and forth with Sammy). None of the band members was at all rude or hostile to fan contact, but I saw so many people asking for pictures, and each time the band member being asked would make his or her stock "I'm posing for a picture with a fan" pose, and I just didn't want to be one more person asking them to make that face one more time. Plus I was shy. Heh. I don't know if that makes sense to any of you, but that was how I ended up feeling.

* Don't think this didn't wound my ego. I was such a flirt when I was young and nubile. What a drag it is, getting old.

...to be continued, but probably not until tomorrow since I'm going to see Gogol Bordello play live in Philadelphia tonight...
