This recipe comes from the red book. It's easy to whip these up while dinner cooks, when you want a little extra for the meal. They lose their charm after they cool off, though, so only make what will be eaten with the meal.

Baking Powder Biscuits

2 C flour (I sometimes use half whole wheat)
1 T sugar
1 T baking powder
1 tsp salt
½C shortening or butter
1 C milk

Heat oven to 450°F. Combine the dry ingredients, then cut in the shortening or butter with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in milk until the dough leaves the sides of the bowl (dough will be soft and sticky).

Drop dough by spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake until golden brown, 10-12 minutes. Immediately remove from sheet and serve.

Makes about a dozen.
