Originally from allrecipes. This is a simple slice-and-bake cookie that keeps well in the refrigerator or freezer -- nice to have on hand for cookie emergencies! These have been a holiday staple for me; I coat the rolls in red and green sugar for a festive look.

Holiday Butter Cookies

1 ½ C sugar
1 C butter
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 ½ C flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
Colored sugar, nonpareils, etc.

In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar and the butter. Stir in the egg and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt, and gradually stir into the creamed mixture until all flour is absorbed. Shape dough into rolls about 1½" in diameter. Coat the outsides of the rolls with colored sugar or other decorations, then wrap in waxed paper. Refrigerate until firm, at least 4 hours or up to 1 week.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease cookie sheets. Unwrap chilled rolls and cut into ¼ inch thick slices. Place 1 inch apart on prepared sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly browned. Remove from baking sheets immediately to cool on wire racks. Makes about 96 cookies.
